Schmidt Youth Awards
Overview
One of the core purposes of the William E. Schmidt Foundation is to nurture and encourage young people in the arts.
For 13 years, an effective means to achieve this goal has been the Schmidt Youth Awards, a competition for high school singers in the state of Indiana. The Foundation has extended the competition to include Sarasota and the Orlando areas in Florida, where Mr. Schmidt now resides.
Participants are to be talented high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are recommended by their choral directors or vocal teachers. They will compete for $1,500, $750 and $500 cash awards, respectively, for the top three performers, and $100 prizes as encouragement to the remaining finalists. All of the participants will benefit from a master class during the day and from the enjoyment of hearing the performances of their peers.
Past winners of the Schmidt Youth Awards have progressed to successful college careers. Although not all of them have chosen careers in the music field, all have expressed gratitude for how much they learned by participating in the Schmidt Youth Awards. Music is a lifetime gift.
