In 2021, with support from the William E. Schmidt Foundation, Schmidt Vocal Arts launched its first ever Undergraduate Awards. This new initiative expands the organization’s reach to singers studying at the undergraduate level. Held entirely online, the competition is open to 110 singers who compete in two rounds. In its first year, spots filled within 20 minutes of accepting applications and had a waitlist of over 100 singers! Awards include four winners and additional finalist and encouragement awards for a total of nearly $25,000 in cash prizes. Competitors are judged by and have the opportunity to connect in a master class setting with esteemed professionals from the industry’s renowned vocal institutions and opera companies. By participating in the Undergraduate Awards, singers become eligible for additional alumni programming and grant opportunities through Schmidt Vocal Arts.
“Bill Schmidt’s visionary investment in programs for young singers has had a profound impact on the field of vocal arts generally, and on the lives of individuals specifically. Being able to expand our programming to reach this next age group of singers who are pursuing careers in the arts is another example of the foundation’s commitment to giving young singers access to opportunities to help them succeed.”
